6 Signs You’re a Woman Who Has Been Through a Lot

Some people have it so much easier than others. They grow up loved, protected, provided for, and supported, and they sail through life with minimal trauma.

Some marry good men on the first try and never experience betrayal or devastation.

And then there are the rest of us, the ones who’ve had to fight for everything.

The ones who know what it’s like to survive things that should’ve broken us.

That’s the inequalities of life.

If you’re reading this and nodding along, this post is for you.

Not to glorify pain or romanticize struggle, but to validate what you’ve been through and acknowledge the woman it’s made you.

6 Signs You’re a Woman Who Has Been Through a Lot

1. You’re Deeply Empathetic Because You Know What Pain Feels Like

The past 7 days have been so traumatic for me.

I had a terrible toothache that kept me awake for three nights and didn’t respond to painkillers.

I had to visit the dentist, and after she gave me three doses of anesthesia, she still couldn’t remove the infected tooth because the pain was unbearable—all because of the severe infection.

So she sent me home with antibiotics and painkillers to return three days later for the extraction.

In my pain, all I could think of was how people become addicted to opioids because it takes away their pain.

I thought of people suffering from chronic illnesses and how they endure pain every single day.

I even thought of the pain Jesus suffered on the cross to reconcile me with God and bring salvation to the world. My pain pales in comparison to His.

And that’s what happens when you’ve been through a lot: you become deeply empathetic, not because you’re trying to be a good person, but because you genuinely understand what suffering feels like.

You don’t judge people for their coping mechanisms because you know what it’s like to be desperate for relief.

Because you’ve been there, you know what it feels like to suffer.

And that empathy is a gift that only comes from having been through your own valleys.

People who have never struggled often lack compassion for those who are struggling.

If you’re deeply empathetic and feel compassion for people’s pain without judgment, you’re a woman who’s been through a lot because only suffering teaches that kind of compassion.

2. You’re Stronger Than You Want to Be

Honestly, I’m tired of hearing the phrase “strong woman.”

I know strength is a positive attribute, but many women are strong because they have no choice!

They say you don’t know how strong you are until being strong is your only option.

Most “strong women” didn’t choose strength.

They were forced into it by circumstances, betrayals, losses, and struggles that would’ve broken them if they didn’t toughen up.

So you’re strong because life didn’t give you the luxury of being soft or being protected.

And now people look at you and say, “Wow, you’re so strong,” like it’s a compliment.

But you know you’re strong because you had to be.

And really, you’re tired of being strong.

Sometimes you just want to break down and have someone else be strong for you.

But you can’t because people depend on you.

3. You Don’t Talk About Your Struggles Unless Someone Really Earns It

There’s a way life will deal with you that you’ll lose the energy to talk about your problems.

Because really, where do you even want to start from?

The childhood trauma, toxic relationships, financial struggles, betrayals from trusted people, losses, disappointment, abuse etc…..

There’s so much, and it’s so heavy, that explaining it all feels like reliving it.

And because you don’t want to overwhelm people with your issues, you just don’t.

You’ve learned that not everyone who asks “how are you?” actually wants the real answer, and not everyone can handle the weight of what you’ve been through.

So you’ve become protective of your story.

You don’t even tell your friends everything anymore.

4. You Can Spot Red Flags From a Mile Away

I grew up learning that experience is the best teacher.

I think I even wrote an essay about it in high school.

It’s easier to know what manipulation looks like if you’ve been manipulated.

I know what fake friendships feel like because I’ve had people smile in my face and stab me in the back.

When you’ve been through a lot in life, you’ll be more sensitive to red flags.

5. You’re Fiercely Protective of Your Peace

You don’t know the value of peace until you’ve been through storms.

When you’ve been through hell, peace isn’t just nice to have; it’s non-negotiable.

And you protect it like your life depends on it, because really, it does.

You’ve learned that not everyone deserves access to your peace, so you don’t keep toxic people around just to avoid being called “difficult,” no, you cut them off!

You don’t tolerate drama or chaos anymore, and you don’t feel guilty for choosing peace over people’s feelings because you know what it feels like to live without peace, and you’re never going back there.

6. You’re Constantly Told “You’re So Strong”

Perhaps this is one of the most profound signs that you’ve been through a lot because everyone can see it.

They know what you’ve survived and watched you go through hell and come out the other side still standing.

So they tell you you’re so strong, and they mean it as a compliment.

They think they’re encouraging you, but you’re tired of hearing it because being told you’re strong is like being told you have no choice but to keep carrying everything.

But what they don’t understand is that you didn’t choose to be strong.

You became strong because life broke you, and you had to rebuild yourself.

You’re strong because nobody came to rescue you, so you had to rescue yourself.

So yes, you’re strong, but you’re also exhausted.

So if people are constantly telling you “you’re so strong,” you’re a woman who’s been through a lot because your strength is visible, your pain is not, and you’re carrying both.

I’m not going to tell you that everything happens for a reason or that your pain made you stronger for some grand purpose.

Sometimes life is just hard, really.

Bad things happen to good people, and you go through hell for no reason at all.

But what I will say is this: you survived.

Whatever you’ve been through, you made it through.

And you’re still here, reading this, trying to heal, trying to grow, trying to be better.

That’s everything.

Keep going, sis. You’ve come this far, and you’re going to make it.
